Ten scouts were sent out this morning. The captain of the presidio of the Californias, Don Fernando de Rivera, himself went with them, with six native pioneers. They carried a supply of tortillas to last for some days. Although a mule was killed to provide rations for the men, few ate of its meat except some European soldiers and the friendly Indians.

The captain set out this morning with the party of men to explore the mountains, and with six Indians to make themselves useful in clearing and opening the road, taking
a supply of tortillas sufficient to last several days. Today a mule was killed to ration the men, but no one ate of it except some of the volunteer European soldiers and the California Indians.
