Gilbert Almonte overcame severe asthma as a youngster to become one of Terra Nova's highest profile athletes. In 1980 he was selected to the United States Olympics Greco Roman wrestling team. However, he never got a chance to wrestle as President Jimmy Carter announced that the United States would boycott the Summer Games due to Russia's invasion of Afghanistan. Following three years of championship wrestling at Terra Nova, graduating in 1977, he became an accomplished amateur wrestler. His travels took him to New Zealand where, as a member of the United States freestyle wrestling team, he compiled a 13-0 record. In 1977, he traveled to Poland and Germany with a Greco Roman Wrestling Cultural Exchange team where he competed against European wrestlers.
