Dennis Lanterman was Terra Nova High School's first track and cross country coach. In 1961 he joined the faculty staff of Pacifica's first high school. Building a team consisting of mostly freshmen and sophomores, it took him just one year to build a strong and winning program. Terra Nova won the North Peninsula League cross country championship in 1962.

He added two more league titles over the next nine years, a 1963 track championship and a 1967 cross country title.

His 1965 cross country team was ranked fourth in California and seventh in the nation. His sprint medley team was ranked third in the nation. In 1969, he transferred to Oceana where he added a 1970 cross country league championship to his resume. He retired from education in 1980.
