As a young child David Williams was always told he was too small to play football and not smart enough to go to college. He proved everybody wrong when following his graduation from Oceana in 1971, he accepted a football scholarship to Utah State University. He had played football and ran track at Oceana. At Utah State he was a three-year starter and a team captain for the football team; he was also captain of the track team. In 1976 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology. He then continued his sports career with brief stays with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. He found a home in the All-USA Semi-Professional Football League playing four years with the San Jose Tigers which won multiple national championships.
