On August 14, 2013, Anthony McCarley, at the age of 54, became the 59th person over the age of 50 to swim across the English Channel. He joined an elite list of historical swimmers as less than 1,900 people of any age or nationality, and only 400 Americans to have swam the Channel. He completed the crossing of the Channel in 13 hours 29 minutes. At the age of 16, the Terra Nova graduate did his first open water swim from Alcatraz to Aquatic Park in San Francisco. Now living in Pennsylvania, McCarley remains a Pacifican at heart, saying, "I've been on the East Coast for 15 years but Pacifica is still my home." As a student at San Francisco State University in the early 1980s he was the coach of the Pacifica Sea Lions swim team. Later he served as a member of the Pacifica Planning Commission. He has made several open water swims over the past six years and has plans to make two major swims later this year, one an 28.5 mile swim around Manhattan and a 20.2 mile swim from Catalina Island.
